How To Hide Your Email Address From Spammers-Use re-Captcha
Nowadays we can see how many people(internet users) volunteer their email address on forums or public boards and comments sections. I assume that no one told them spammers use a programs that can crawl the internet/website in search of email addresses, or perhaps they just don’t care. As a websites owner, I often hesitate about posting or sharing my email address too publicly, but sometimes it’s inevitable.

I’ve used some different tricks to overcome these spammers, like using graphics, contact forms, or spelling out the entire email address (ex: myname [at] gmail.com), but somehow, those spammers still manage to get the real email address. Anyway, you’re probably familiar with the ‘CAPTCHA’ (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) since most websites with logins and forms use them currently, but until now I haven’t seen one for individual email addresses.

Our friends at Carnegie Mellon University have created an application called Mailhide to help us to hide our email address and to keep it safe from spammers. Users have to enter their email address and will have to copy a piece of code that displays a partial email address—————— (try this out: t@internetgecko.com) wherever it’s posted (ex: in forums). If a real person really wants to find out what the entire email address is, they’ll have to solve one of the two CAPTCHAs the application displays. This will prevent any bots or automated spam softwares from obtaining your email address automatically. HTML code is also provided for website owners.

The words sometimes can be hard to read, but once it solved, the visitor is taken to a page that shows the complete email address that they want(here’s an example). Maybe it’s a liltle bit tricky, but it keeps spammers and automated spam bots from collecting your email address right?
