WAO-1 -Japan Face Massaging Robot
Most of girls out there love facials, but what if the next facial you got was done by a hi-tech robot? In Japan, the technology to do this already exists thanks to the Tokyo’s Waseda University. The university developed WAO-1 (the Waseda Asahi Oral Rehabilitation) at the first place just for relieving the symptoms of disorders such as xerostomia, jaw arthritis and swallowing disorder. Treatments that apply “just the right amount of pressure” without excessive force have been realized by using existing technologies developed for robots according to the project leader Atsuo Takanishi, but is now being considered for beautician to use it in beauty spas.

WAO-1 is equipped with algorithm that automatically forms a massage track based on the data on the location and conditions of maxillofacial tissues and the maxillofacial transformation model acquired from the images of CT and MRI. If the portion to be massaged and the strength to be applied are selected, a massage track is formed automatically by the algorithm.

The WAO-1 is fitted with ceramic spheres that roll over the jaw applying the right amount of pressure at a sensible speed in areas where you need it most. Some salons in Japan already use robotic machine to wash a client’s hair—here’s the example of the shampoo robot. Do you want to buy one for your home?

Currently, the WAO-1 robot was based on average human data, but there are plans to improve it based on the individual data of each patient in the future. For adjustment of each joint, general DC motors are used. It incorporates a DC servo driver (manufactured by Tokushu Denso Co., Ltd., headquartered in Tokyo) that was developed for two-way robots and a motor manufactured by Maxon Motor of Switzerland.
